History...

Viking Mill was built around 1890 for use as a textile mill. The mill building contained looms for manufacturing carpets. Constructed in a community where employees walked to and from work, living and working spaces were closely nit.

Its construction is of brick walls and hardwood timbers with multi-layered wood floors. In the latter half of the 1800’s, one of the most pressing issues with which cities were dealing, was devastating fire. At the time the Viking Mill building was constructed, it was considered “state of the art” in resisting fire. The inner structure of the building is composed of wood beams that are 12” x 12” and larger. They are composed of a hard wood that will char on the outside and the char will form a protective coating that fire will have a difficult time penetrating. Viking Mill is historic in construction but current in our lives, by providing space in which we can be creative.
